Due to the untimely death of her father, Sephie recently became Minister of the island-city Meridian. At the time of his death she was touched by a strange mark, a sigil on her forehead; it has granted her some unusual abilities, among them flight, empathy, and the gift of healing. But there are those among her peers who would say that a girl of her age is unfit to rule, and usurped her authority. Among those is her uncle Ilahn, Minister of Cadador, the richest of the sky islands. He was also marked by the sigil, but his powers are those of destruction. They are balanced forces; Ilahn seeks to bring their world of Demetria beneath his rule, while Sephie wishes only to reclaim and govern her beloved island.
